Description

'Room at the Top' — John Braine 'Room at the Top' follows Joe Lampton, a young man from a working-class background who arrives in the Yorkshire town of Warley determined to improve his social position. He becomes involved with two very different women—Susan Brown, the daughter of a wealthy local family, and Alice Aisgill, an older married woman—forcing him to balance ambition, desire and personal loyalty. Through Joe’s pursuit of wealth and status, Braine examines class, social mobility, marriage and the compromises that accompany the desire for a more prosperous life. First published in 1957, the novel became one of the defining works of the British “Angry Young Men” movement and was adapted into an acclaimed 1959 film.
