Description
'The Way of All Flesh' by Samuel Butler is a semi-autobiographical novel tracing several generations of the Pontifex family, with particular attention to Ernest Pontifex and his difficult relationship with his authoritarian father, Theobald. Written between 1873 and 1884 but published posthumously in 1903, the novel draws heavily on Butler’s own experiences and offers a sharp critique of Victorian family life, religious morality and bourgeois respectability. Through Ernest’s struggle to establish an independent life and set of beliefs, Butler explores the influence of parents, education, religion and social convention on the individual. The novel’s irony and unconventional treatment of Victorian domestic life have made it an important precursor to the modern English novel.
