Charles Kingsley’s 'Westward Ho!' (1855) is a historical adventure novel set during the reign of Elizabeth I, following the exploits of the young Devonshire adventurer Amyas Leigh. After joining Sir Francis Drake at sea, Amyas becomes involved in voyages to the Caribbean, encounters with the Spanish, and the search for wealth and adventure in the New World. The story combines romance, maritime adventure and historical events, including the Spanish Armada, while exploring themes of loyalty, faith, revenge and forgiveness. With its colourful Elizabethan setting and sweeping adventures, 'Westward Ho!' is one of Kingsley’s best-known historical novels.
