Description

'Adolph Jentsch' by Olga Levinson is an illustrated monograph on the German-born artist who became closely associated with the landscapes of South West Africa (now Namibia). Jentsch arrived in South West Africa in 1938 and developed a distinctive approach to landscape painting, working first in oils and later primarily in watercolour, with his later work showing an interest in the contemplative qualities of Chinese art. Levinson examines his life and artistic development alongside reproductions of his paintings and watercolours, offering insight into his unusual and deeply personal response to the Namibian landscape. First published by Human & Rousseau in 1973, the book is an important early study of one of Namibia’s notable twentieth-century artists.
