Cecil Higgs: Close Up — Dieter Bertram

Description

'Cecil Higgs: Close Up' is a biography of South African artist Cecil Higgs (1898–1986), whose work is particularly associated with landscapes and still lifes. Dieter Bertram draws on Higgs’s personal diaries, notebooks and drafts of letters, as well as correspondence with friends and fellow artists, to provide an intimate account of both her private life and artistic career. The book traces her development from her childhood on a Free State farm through her art studies in South Africa and London and her later career in South Africa. Illustrated with reproductions and photographs, it offers both a personal portrait of Higgs and an account of her place in South African art.
