Description
'Tauza: Bob Gosani’s People' is a photographic collection presenting the work of South African photojournalist Bob Gosani, one of the prominent photographers associated with Drum magazine in the 1950s. His photographs document the social, political and cultural life of Black South Africans, with subjects ranging from Sophiatown, township jazz and football to family life, fashion, political gatherings and the experiences of women and children. The book is particularly notable for Gosani’s photographs of the degrading “Tauza dance” that prisoners were forced to perform at Johannesburg’s Fort prison, images that contributed to public outrage when published in Drum. First published in 2005 by Struik, the 116-page volume preserves an important visual record of South African life during the apartheid era.
