Description
'Sekoto' is an illustrated monograph on Gerard Sekoto (1913–1993), a pioneering South African artist widely regarded as a major figure in the development of modern Black South African art. Born in the Transvaal, Sekoto became known for his expressive paintings of everyday life in Black urban communities, particularly in Sophiatown, District Six and Eastwood, Pretoria. After leaving South Africa for Paris in 1947, he continued to explore themes of memory, identity, community and the experience of exile through his art. Published in association with the Johannesburg Art Gallery, this volume presents Sekoto’s artistic achievements and offers insight into his enduring contribution to South African art history.
