Description
'Sandra McGregor: 'Onse Artist' in District Six' by Dolores Fleischer is a biography of the South African artist Sandra McGregor, who painted the people and places of District Six in Cape Town from 1962 to 1980. A portrait painter, McGregor documented the community both before and during the forced removals that followed the declaration of District Six as a white area in 1966. The book explores her life and work alongside the changing social and political circumstances of District Six, preserving a visual record of a community and neighbourhood that were profoundly transformed by forced removals. First published by Print Matters in 2010, the book is extensively illustrated with reproductions of McGregor’s artwork and photographs.
