Description
'Memorandum: A Story with Paintings' brings together the writing of Marlene van Niekerk and the paintings of South African artist Adriaan van Zyl in a distinctive collaboration between literature and visual art. The novel follows J. F. Wiid, a retired town planner diagnosed with terminal cancer, as he reflects on mortality, human suffering and the meaning of life while in hospital. His reflections are shaped by conversations overheard between fellow patients and his subsequent explorations of their philosophical and literary references. Accompanied by Van Zyl’s stark 'Hospital Series' paintings, the book offers a profound meditation on death, memory and the possibility of finding meaning in human existence. First published in 2006 by Human & Rousseau, the English edition was translated by Michiel Heyns.
