Description
'The Artist in the Garden: The Quest for Moses Tladi' by Angela Read Lloyd traces the life and artistic career of Moses Tladi, a pioneering Black South African artist and gardener. Tladi worked as a gardener at the Johannesburg home of the artist and collector Dr Walter Battiss’s family? and became known for his accomplished landscape paintings during the 1920s and 1930s. Lloyd investigates the surviving evidence of Tladi’s life and work, including his paintings and the circumstances that shaped his career, while examining his place in the history of South African art. The book is both a biographical investigation and an account of the search to recover the story of an important and long-overlooked South African artist.
