Description

'The Informer' by Liam O’Flaherty is a powerful novel set in 1920s Dublin during the aftermath of the Irish Civil War. The story follows Gypo Nolan, a down-and-out former policeman who betrays his friend Frankie McPhillip, a member of a revolutionary organisation, by revealing his whereabouts to the authorities. Haunted by guilt and increasingly desperate to escape suspicion, Gypo struggles under the scrutiny of his former comrades, whose pursuit of justice becomes a tense examination of loyalty, betrayal and moral weakness. First published in 1925, this Folio Society edition from 1961 features lithographs by Nigel Lambourne, which complement O’Flaherty’s stark portrayal of poverty, political violence and life in Dublin’s underworld.
