Description
'The Nun' by Denis Diderot tells the story of Suzanne Simonin, a young woman forced by her family to enter a convent and take religious vows against her will. Through Suzanne’s first-person account, the novel describes her experiences in several convents, where she encounters cruelty, persecution and the psychological effects of enforced religious life. Diderot uses her suffering to examine religious institutions, personal freedom, intolerance and the consequences of forcing individuals into vocations they have not chosen. The novel originated in the 1750s as a literary hoax inspired partly by a real case, but was first published in France in 1796, after Diderot’s death. Folio Society edition - Slipcase included
