Description
'The History of the Great Rebellion' is Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon’s contemporary account of the English Civil Wars, edited and abridged by Roger Lockyer for this 1967 Folio Society edition. Written from the perspective of a prominent Royalist and former adviser to Charles I, Clarendon chronicles the conflict between the Crown and Parliament, from the raising of the King’s standard in 1642 through the Second Civil War and the execution of Charles I in 1649. Lockyer’s selection places particular emphasis on Clarendon’s vivid character portraits and observations of the political and military figures of the period. This edition includes maps, illustrations and a biographical index, and presents Clarendon’s major historical work in a single-volume reading edition.
