The Face of the Country - Karel Schoeman

Description

The Face of the Country: A South African Family Album, 1860–1910, selected and introduced by Karel Schoeman, presents 273 historical photographs from the collections of the South African Library in Cape Town. The images, many of them formal portraits of individuals, couples and families, offer a fascinating glimpse into the lives of South Africans during a period of profound social and political change. Accompanied by extensive commentary, the photographs are placed in their historical context, documenting the people, communities and everyday life of the country during the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. Published by Human & Rousseau in 1996, this richly illustrated volume is a valuable resource for anyone interested in South African history, historical photography and the country's cultural heritage.
