Description
Bertolt Brecht’s 'Mother Courage and Her Children' follows Anna Fierling, known as Mother Courage, a travelling canteen woman who makes her living by following armies during the Thirty Years’ War. As she moves across Europe with her three children, her attempts to profit from the conflict become increasingly entangled with its devastating consequences. The play explores war, survival, commerce and the difficult choices made by ordinary people caught within forces beyond their control. Written in 1939 and first performed in 1941, it is one of Brecht’s best-known examples of Epic Theatre and remains a powerful examination of the human cost of war.
