‘Brakdak: Flatroofs in the Karoo’ is a photographic record of traditional flat-roofed vernacular architecture in the Karoo, featuring photographs taken by South African architect Gabriel Fagan between 1959 and 1964. Compiled by Gwen Fagan, the book brings together historic images of farmhouses, village buildings and streetscapes that document a distinctive form of rural architecture. Many of the buildings photographed have since disappeared or undergone substantial changes, making the collection a valuable record of the region’s architectural heritage. Published by Breestraat Publikasies in 2008, this illustrated volume offers a glimpse into the materials, forms and character of the Karoo’s built environment.
