Description
Edited by Karel A. Bakker, Nicholas J. Clarke and Roger C. Fisher, 'Eclectic ZA Wilhelmiens: A Shared Dutch Built Heritage in South Africa' examines the influence of Dutch architecture on South Africa’s built environment during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Published by Visual Books in Pretoria in 2014, the volume challenges the tendency to classify much of this architecture simply as Victorian, exploring instead its connections to Dutch architectural traditions and the history of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. Contributions by researchers from South Africa and the Netherlands examine architectural styles, building types, public works, road bridges and the work of Dutch-trained architects. Richly illustrated and based on an extensive research project at the University of Pretoria, this substantial reference work offers an important perspective on South African architectural history and heritage.
