Description
‘The Memoirs of Paul Kruger’, Volume II, continues Paul Kruger’s autobiographical account of his life and political career as president of the South African Republic. It follows his experiences during the nineteenth-century conflicts and political struggles that shaped the Transvaal, including the First Basuto War, disputes over the republic’s constitution, the annexation of the Transvaal by Britain and the struggle to restore its independence. The narrative explores Kruger’s political dealings with British representatives, his visits to London and the growing tensions surrounding the discovery of gold and the increasing influence of figures such as Cecil Rhodes. Later sections cover the Uitlander question, negotiations with Britain and the deteriorating relationship between Kruger’s government and British imperial authorities in the years leading up to the Second Anglo-Boer War. The volume also includes speeches, official documents and correspondence that provide insight into Kruger’s own perspective on the political events of his time. His memoirs were dictated to H. C. Bredell and Piet Grobler, edited by A. Schowalter and translated into English by Alexander Teixeira de Mattos. This volume was published by T. Fisher Unwin in London in 1902.
