Description
‘Paul Kruger: His Life and Times’ by Manfred Nathan is a comprehensive biography of Paul Kruger (1825–1904), the president of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek whose political career became closely intertwined with South Africa’s history during the second half of the nineteenth century. The book traces Kruger’s early life on the frontier, his development as a Boer leader, his rise to the presidency and his efforts to defend the independence of the Transvaal. Nathan examines the republic’s changing political circumstances, including British intervention, the First Anglo-Boer War, the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand and the growing tensions between the Boer government and the British Empire. The narrative also explores Kruger’s political relationships, leadership and religious convictions, as well as the events leading to the Second Anglo-Boer War and his final years in exile in Europe. Drawing on historical records and contemporary accounts, Nathan presents a detailed portrait of Kruger within the broader political and social history of nineteenth-century South Africa. Published by the Knox Publishing Company in Durban in 1941, the book contains 510 pages and includes illustrations and an index.
