Description
‘Bushveld Doctor’ by C. Louis Leipoldt is an autobiographical account of his experiences as the first Medical Inspector of Schools in the Transvaal, a position he took up in 1914. Travelling extensively through remote rural districts, Leipoldt describes the challenges of providing medical care and inspecting schools across a vast and often isolated region. His narrative goes beyond his professional duties to record the people he encountered, their customs and living conditions, and the political and social realities of rural South Africa in the early twentieth century. With his characteristic curiosity, he also writes about the Bushveld’s landscapes, plants, wildlife and changing seasons, combining personal anecdotes with observations from his work as a doctor. The book offers a vivid firsthand account of a pioneering period in South African school health services, while revealing Leipoldt’s interests as a physician, naturalist and literary observer. Originally published by Jonathan Cape in London in 1937, it is widely regarded as the work closest to an autobiography that Leipoldt wrote.
