Terms & Conditions

Last updated: 7 October 2026
Welcome to Bokmakiri. These Terms & Conditions govern the use of our website and the purchase of books and other products from our online shop. By placing an order through our website, you agree to these Terms & Conditions.
1. About Us
Bokmakiri is an online second-hand bookshop based in South Africa.
Business name: Bokmakiri
Physical address: 5 Swellengrebel Street, Swellendam, Western Cape.
Email: info@bokamkiri.co.za
Telephone: 0713439550
Website: bokmakiri.co.za
2. Our Books
Unless otherwise stated, all books sold through our website are second-hand and previously owned.
As second-hand books, they may show signs of previous ownership, age and use. This may include, but is not limited to:
- minor marks or stains;
- inscriptions or previous owners' names;
- highlighting or annotations;
- creases or wear to pages and covers;
- fading or discolouration;
- foxing or age-related spotting;
- shelf wear;
- worn or damaged dust jackets;
- minor tears or other signs of use.
We make every reasonable effort to inspect our books and describe their condition accurately. Where we identify significant damage, markings or other defects, we will disclose them in the product description or otherwise indicate the condition of the book.
Because these are second-hand books, it is possible that minor marks, wear or imperfections may not be noticed during inspection. Minor imperfections consistent with the age and second-hand nature of a book will not, on their own, constitute grounds for a return. Nothing in this section limits any rights a consumer may have under applicable South African consumer-protection legislation.
3. Product Descriptions and Photographs
We make reasonable efforts to ensure that product descriptions, photographs, prices and other information on the website are accurate.
Photographs are intended to provide a representation of the actual book being sold. Colours may appear slightly different depending on the customer's screen or device.
Where an edition, publication year, publisher, binding or other bibliographical detail is specifically stated, we make reasonable efforts to ensure that the information is accurate. If a significant error in a product listing is discovered before an order is fulfilled, we reserve the right to contact the customer regarding the error and, where appropriate, cancel the affected order and refund any payment received.
4. Product Availability
Most of our second-hand books are individual, one-off items. A book displayed on the website is therefore subject to availability.
We reserve the right to cancel an order if a product is no longer available or cannot reasonably be supplied. If payment has already been received for a product that we cannot supply, the customer will be notified and the amount paid for that product will be refunded.
5. Prices
All prices displayed on our website are in South African Rand (ZAR).
The price displayed at the time an order is placed will apply to that order, subject to obvious pricing or listing errors.
We reserve the right to correct genuine pricing errors before an order is fulfilled. If an order has been placed at an obviously incorrect price, we will contact the customer before processing the order and provide the option to proceed at the correct price or cancel the order.
6. Payment
Payment must be successfully received before an order is dispatched.
We accept the payment methods made available during checkout.
An order is not considered fully confirmed until payment has been successfully received and the order has been accepted by us.
We do not store complete payment-card details on our website. Payments may be processed through our selected payment service provider.
7. Shipping and Delivery
We currently offer delivery within SOUTH AFRICA.
A standard shipping fee of R150 applies to orders below R1,500.
Orders of R1,500 or more qualify for free standard shipping.
The shipping threshold is calculated based on the value of the products in the order EXCLUDING SHIPPING.
Orders are generally dispatched within 3 business days after payment has been received. Delivery times may vary depending on the destination, courier service and circumstances outside our control.
Where available, tracking information will be provided to the customer.
Delivery dates and times provided by us or our courier are estimates rather than guarantees unless expressly stated otherwise.
We are not responsible for delays caused by circumstances outside our reasonable control, including courier delays, severe weather, strikes, natural disasters or other unforeseen events.
8. Incorrect Delivery Information
Customers are responsible for providing a complete and accurate delivery address and contact information.
If an order cannot be delivered because incorrect or incomplete information was provided by the customer, additional delivery charges may apply if the parcel needs to be redirected or redelivered.
Where possible, we will contact the customer to resolve the issue.
9. Damaged or Lost Parcels
If a parcel appears to have been damaged during delivery, customers should notify us as soon as reasonably possible and provide photographs of the packaging and the damaged book. If an order is reported as lost in transit, we will investigate the matter with the relevant courier or delivery provider.
Nothing in this section limits any rights or remedies that a customer may have under applicable law.
10. Returns and Refunds
10.1 Change-of-mind purchases
Because our books are generally unique, second-hand items, we do not accept returns or provide refunds simply because a customer has changed their mind, ordered the wrong book, or no longer wants the item, except where a return or refund is required by applicable law. Customers are encouraged to carefully review the product description, photographs, edition information and condition information before placing an order.
10.2 Defective or materially misdescribed goods
Nothing in these Terms & Conditions excludes or limits any statutory consumer rights. If a book has a material defect that was not disclosed in the product listing, or if the book is materially different from the description provided, the customer should contact us as soon as reasonably possible after receiving the order.
We will assess the matter and, where the customer has a valid statutory right to a remedy, provide the remedy required by applicable law.
Under the Consumer Protection Act, goods may in certain circumstances be returned within six months where they fail to meet the applicable requirements or standards, with the consumer entitled to the applicable remedy provided by the Act.
The fact that a book is second-hand does not remove applicable consumer rights.
10.3 Minor imperfections
Minor marks, wear, age-related characteristics or imperfections that are consistent with the second-hand nature of the book, and which do not materially affect the book's condition or use, will not ordinarily constitute grounds for a return.
We cannot guarantee that every minor mark or imperfection will be identified during inspection.
10.4 Returns procedure
Customers wishing to raise an issue with an order should contact us at info@bokmakiri.co.za and provide:
- the order number;
- the name of the book;
- a description of the problem; and
- photographs where relevant.
We may request that the book be returned for inspection where this is reasonably necessary. Where a return is required because of a valid statutory claim, we will provide the appropriate return instructions.
11. Refunds
Where a refund is required under these Terms & Conditions or applicable law, the refund will generally be made using the original payment method, unless another method is agreed or required by law.
Shipping costs will be dealt with in accordance with the circumstances of the return and applicable law.
We do not provide cash refunds for ordinary change-of-mind purchases where no legal right to a refund exists.
12. Order Cancellation
We reserve the right to cancel an order where:
- a product is unavailable;
- there is an obvious error in the product description or price;
- the transaction appears to be fraudulent or unauthorised;
- the customer has provided materially incorrect delivery information; or
- circumstances outside our reasonable control prevent us from fulfilling the order. If we cancel an order after receiving payment, we will refund the amount paid for the affected order or product, as applicable.
13. Customer Responsibilities
Customers agree to:
- provide accurate personal and delivery information;
- provide a valid email address and contact number;
- review their order before completing payment;
- ensure that someone is available to receive the delivery where necessary; and
- notify us promptly of any problems concerning an order.
14. Website Use
Customers may use our website for lawful purposes only.
You must not:
- interfere with the operation or security of the website;
- attempt to gain unauthorised access to our systems;
- use the website for fraudulent purposes;
- reproduce or commercially exploit our website content without permission; or
- use the website in a way that violates applicable South African law.
We reserve the right to restrict or terminate access to the website where we reasonably believe that it is being misused.
15. Website Content and Copyright
Unless otherwise stated, original text, photographs, graphics, logos, designs and other original material created for Bokmakiri and displayed on this website belong to Bokmakiri or are used with permission.
Such material may not be copied, reproduced, modified, distributed or commercially exploited without our prior written permission, except where permitted by law.
Product photographs or information supplied by third parties remain subject to the rights of their respective owners.
16. Website Errors and Availability
We make reasonable efforts to keep the website accurate and available, but we do not guarantee that the website will always be uninterrupted, error-free or free from technical problems. The website may occasionally be unavailable because of maintenance, technical problems, updates or circumstances outside our reasonable control.
We reserve the right to correct typographical, technical, pricing or other errors on the website.
17. Privacy and Personal Information
We respect the privacy of our customers and handle personal information in accordance with applicable South African privacy legislation, including the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA). POPIA establishes requirements for the lawful processing and protection of personal information.
We may collect and use personal information such as a customer's name, email address, telephone number, billing information and delivery address where reasonably necessary to:
- process and fulfil orders;
- arrange delivery;
- communicate with customers;
- process payments;
- provide customer support;
- maintain appropriate business and transaction records; and
- comply with legal obligations.
We will take reasonable measures to protect personal information against unauthorised access, loss or misuse.
Personal information may be shared with relevant service providers where reasonably necessary to fulfil an order, such as payment processors and delivery companies.
We will not sell customers' personal information to third parties.
For more information about how we collect, use, store and protect personal information, please see our Privacy Policy.
18. Marketing Communications
Where applicable, customers may receive marketing communications from us only where permitted by applicable law.
Customers may unsubscribe from marketing communications at any time by using the unsubscribe option provided or by contacting us at info@bokmakiri.co.za.
19. Complaints and Customer Support
We aim to resolve customer concerns fairly and promptly.
For any questions, complaints or concerns regarding an order, please contact: Email: info@bokmakiri.co.za
Telephone: 0713439550
Postal/Physical address: 5 Swellengrebel street, Swellendam, 7640.
Please include your order number and sufficient information for us to investigate the matter. Nothing in this complaints procedure limits a customer's right to seek assistance or make a complaint to an appropriate regulatory or dispute-resolution body.
20. Force Majeure
We will not be responsible for a failure or delay in performing our obligations where the failure or delay results from circumstances beyond our reasonable control.
Such circumstances may include natural disasters, severe weather, fire, war, civil unrest, strikes, major disruptions to transport or telecommunications, government action, or other unforeseeable events.
Where reasonably possible, we will notify affected customers and take reasonable steps to minimise the impact.
21. Changes to These Terms & Conditions
We may update these Terms & Conditions from time to time.
The latest version will be published on this website and will indicate the date on which it was last updated.
Changes will generally apply to orders placed after the updated Terms & Conditions have been published, unless otherwise required by law.
22. Governing Law
These Terms & Conditions are governed by the laws of the Republic of South Africa. Nothing in these Terms & Conditions is intended to exclude, restrict or waive any right or protection that a consumer is entitled to under applicable South African law.
23. Severability
If any provision of these Terms & Conditions is found to be unlawful, invalid or unenforceable, that provision will be interpreted or amended to the extent necessary to make it lawful and enforceable where possible.
The remaining provisions will continue to apply.
24. Entire agreement
These Terms & Conditions, together with the relevant product description, Privacy Policy and any other policies expressly incorporated into them, constitute the terms governing purchases made through this website, subject to any rights and obligations imposed by applicable law.
